Students from a high school in North Dakota wrote to Kurt Vonnegut asking for advice on pursuing a career in the arts. In his response, Vonnegut shared his own experiences as a writer and stressed that the true value of art lies in the act of creation itself, not in its success or perfection, or if it's any good. He encouraged the students to make art for the joy and fulfillment it brings, rather than seeking external approval, and urged them to keep creating, regardless of how their work was judged.
